Dear Glenda

The Origins of Elizabeth Jones born abt 1858 in Aberdare

Please find a quote regarding Eliza(beth) Jones. This is not a straightforward case so I propose to do this on an hourly rate but with a clearly defined sum to pay for the findings we can make. We will not exceed the hours shown so you can be assured that nothing more will be payable unless you require further research.

There are 86 birth records one year either side of Elizabeth's birth in her district alone. There are far more in her county and, whilst it might be possible to obtain this certificate, the cost of searching and obtaining the certificates themselves would be too high.

(There is a birth record for an Elizabeth earlier than her census-record year featuring her mother's rare maiden name in the same county but it is probably too early. We can obtain this if required).

We therefore propose the following (1, 3, 4 and 5 are guaranteed):-

  1. Locate the family in censuses from 1851 to 1891 in various counties. We assume you have the subsequent ones. These will also show Elizabeth's grandparents.
  2. Seek the family's 1841 census (there are a few possibles);
  3. Obtain the marriage certificate for Elizabeth's parents;
  4. Obtain the birth certificate of one sibling;
  5. If required, obtain the earlier birth certificate for Elizabeth with the same mother's maiden name mentioned above. The interesting thing about this and a possible reason for difficulties in locating it is that the birth was outside their normal parish around the same time as their marriage;
  6. Seek death certificate of Elizabeth's father if required:
  7. Seek information on Matthew's pit accident; and
  8. Check for Elizabeth in the 1939 register if she survived till that time. This should show her exact birth date. If already known, please advise.

A 5% discount is included.

The quote might appear high but there is a good deal of advanced and experienced work required on this and it will save you a great deal of time and expense in the long run.

If this is acceptable, please accept the quote and make the half payment as shown for the deposit (£184.66). If you want the quote revised, declined, payment delayed or have any queries, please let me know.

Best wishes

Amy

    I draw your attention to number 7 above. The pit accident killed Mathias James my great grandfather in 1913 not Mathew Jones, & I already have those details in my ancestry.co.uk tree. However I have not yet discovered Elizabeth’s death or whereabouts after that.
    I am willing to go ahead with the research on Elizabeth as I am keen to further my mother Glenys Mary Bolton’s female line. Please let me know if the quote remains the same. I do want assurance that you have located the correct Elizabeth James Nee Jones as I have failed repeatedly to do this due to the many Elizabeth Jones born around the same time & location. despite my having learned her father’s name of Mathew Jones from obtaining Elizabeth’s marriage certificate dated 1881 to Mathias James with that information.

      Thank you for that very useful information Glenda. We will look into that but think we have found Mat(t)hew’s death record. I think ‘Mathew’ was a typo: we meant that we would see what we could find on Mathias unless you have all the details already.
      Thank you also for your payment. We are going through your case to order certificates as appropriate. Please allow 10 working days for these to be back.

      Best wishes
      Amy
